Voluntary Alternative to Quarantine

In an effort to allow students to safely continue with in person instruction, the District is implementing an alternative to quarantine. We will continue to prioritize vaccination for all eligible students and staff, universal masking in school buildings, and access to at-home testing options.

This voluntary alternative to quarantine through testing will hopefully allow students the opportunity to remain in in-person learning despite transmission risk due to a recent educational setting exposure, or a positive COVID-19 test result.

Students who are identified as close contacts to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 or a student who has tested positive for COVID-19, will be excluded from school, unless an exception is met.

A close contact, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), is any vaccinated or unvaccinated student in the indoor classroom setting within 6 feet of an infected person for more than a cumulative 15 minutes over a 24-hour period, or in a mealtime setting within 6 feet of an infected person for more than a cumulative 15 minutes over a 24-hour period.  If you are a student in an indoor K-12 classroom setting and were within 6 feet of another student with COVID-19, you do not need to quarantine if both the infected student and the exposed student(s) correctly and consistently wore well-fitting masks the entire time.

Exception: Students are not recommended to be excluded from school in the Voluntary Alternative to Quarantine program if they remain symptomatic:

    1. Fully vaccinated*
      • 2 weeks have passed since their second dose of a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
      • 2 weeks have passed since their single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine
    2. Recent COVID-19 infection
      • Individuals who have had a COVID-19 infection with a symptom onset or test collection date (if asymptomatic) within the last 90 days

*Fully vaccinated individuals are recommended to be tested 3-5 days after an exposure to COVID-19 and wear a mask for 14 days (or until a negative COVID-19 test result is recorded 3-5 days after the exposure).
