District Task Force
Albert Lea Area Schools is establishing a District Task Force to study how the district’s facilities and operational costs align with current and future educational needs. The Task Force will analyze key data and provide recommendations to district administration regarding the most effective and efficient use of school buildings.
BACKGROUND
As responsible stewards of community resources, the district periodically reviews its facilities to ensure they meet the needs of students, staff, and the community.
- The average age of district facilities is approximately 49 years, according to 2024 Minnesota Department of Education data.
- Albert Lea High School, built in 2000, is the district’s newest building.
- Student enrollment has been declining and is projected to continue doing so, which directly impacts district revenue.
- The district currently has more space than enrollment trends require, increasing maintenance and operational costs.
Given these realities, the Task Force will help the district plan for a sustainable future that balances educational quality, facility efficiency, and financial responsibility.
Task Force Objectives
The Task Force will develop recommendations that:
- Support the district’s educational goals and Strategic Plan.
- Are financially attainable and sustainable for a 10 year financial plan.
- Reflect the values and priorities of the Albert Lea community.
- Address facility use and enrollment projections for the next 10 years, while identifying major considerations beyond that timeframe.
- Promote safe, efficient, and effective learning environments that promote the “Best Educational Experience for all learners.
To achieve this, the Task Force will analyze data related to:
- Building capacity and enrollment projections.
- Facility maintenance and capital improvement needs.
- Operational and capital costs across the district.
Membership & Representation
The Task Force will include approximately 20 members representing a cross-section of the community, including:
- Teachers and staff
- School and district administrators
- Parents and families
- Community members
- School Board members (serving as observers)
The group will also gather input from students, staff, and the broader community throughout the process using a variety of communication channels.
Timeline
The Task Force will meet approximately five times between October 2025 and January 2026:
- November 12, 2025 – Meeting 1 - Field House
- November 25, 2025 – Meeting 2 - Field House
- December 10, 2025 – Meeting 3 - Field House
- January 7, 2026 – Meeting 4 - Field House
- January 21, 2026 – Meeting 5 - Field House
These meetings are held from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
Recommendations will be presented to district administration in January 2026 to allow for review and cost analysis. A final recommendation to the School Board is anticipated in Spring 2026.
Expected Outcome
By the conclusion of this process, Albert Lea Area Schools will have a set of community-informed recommendations to guide facility planning for the next decade, ensuring that district buildings effectively support teaching and learning while maintaining long-term financial sustainability.
